Teenager shot three times near Jordan Manners's home

globeandmail.com: Teenager shot three times near Jordan Manners's home

August 28, 2007

The sight of forensic investigators scouring a north-end neighbourhood for clues was all too familiar for residents yesterday after a 17-year-old man was shot three times just metres from where Jordan Manners lived.

The community housing complex on Shoreham Court near Jane Street and Steeles Avenue West has a long history of gun violence, and was most recently shaken by the death of the 15-year-old high school student in May and a gunfight that erupted last week during a children's barbecue.

After yesterday's brazen shootout, police say they found the man collapsed and bleeding in a parking lot of the public housing complex just before 5 p.m. He was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he was listed in critical condition. Police were looking for at least three men last night.

Contentious divorces - Parental Alienation Syndrome

Sam Hasler's Indiana Divorce & Family Law Blog: Contentious divorces - Parental Alienation Syndrome

I first heard the term Parental Alienation Syndrome back in 1999. It was a very ugly divorce with some very nasty allegations made against my client, the husband, which the judge chose to believe. He changed his mind when the mother absconded with the child when the father was finally given unfettered visitation rights.

New research on alienated children

new research on alienated children

Several years ago, our newsletter featured an article on parental alienation, in which we summarized Richard Gardner's proposition that parental alienation syndrome, or PAS, was a diagnosable disorder with distinct features. Over the past several years, his opinions have received much criticism and led mental health professionals to formulate research-based explanations of the dynamics that cause children to reject contact with a parent. On the basis of their research, Drs. Joan Kelly and Janet Johnston recently published a new theory of the alienated child, which we believe advances understanding of this complicated issue. Since this topic is of interest to so many of our readers, we are providing a summary of their paper.

Staff Reporters

Police are looking at a number of theories as to how a mother of three died after being confronted at a Kingston Road motel with a man.

The 22-year-old succumbed to her injuries Thursday. Paramedics found her traumatized body outside a vehicle on a driveway at an apartment building at 2225 Eglinton Ave. E. just after daybreak Wednesday.

Police allege the woman's common-law husband drove her there after slashing another man at the Roycroft Motel early Wednesday. The common-law husband faces attempted murder, aggravated assault and dangerous weapons charges.

But investigators are not certain yet whether he is directly to blame for the young woman's death.

Divorce Source: Parental Alienation

Divorce Source: Parental Alienation

Parental alienation varies in the degree of severity, as seen in the behaviors and attitudes of both the parents and the children. The severity can be of such little consequence as a parent occasionally calling the other parent a derogatory name; or it could be as overwhelming as the parent's campaign of consciously destroying the children's relationship with the other parent. Most children are able to brush off a parent's off hand comment about the other parent that is made in frustration. On the other hand, children may not be able to resist a parent's persistent campaign of hatred and alienation.

As Boston police probed whether a Roslindale mother in the throes of despair may have murdered her two young children, relatives and friends of the woman, who is hospitalized with stab wounds, described her as a lost soul who clings to abusive men.

Relatives, friends and co-workers identified the mother as Angela Lopez, 30, and her children as Dennis, 10, and Jasmine, 12.
Police responding to a Sunday night call for a suicidal woman had to kick in an air-conditioning unit to gain entry to the Maynard Street home, where a high-ranking BPD source said they found the bodies of the children tucked in their beds and the mother brutally stabbed in what many believe was a self-inflicted attack."
